Division of Homeland Security
The Homeland Security Division of the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office consists of the S.W.A.T. Team, Bomb Squad, Hostage Negotiators, Criminal Intelligence Unit, and the Facility Deputy Unit. All of these teams have different capabilities but will maintain the same operating philosophy to achieve our core objectives. Each section will strive to develop public and private partnerships to enhance our counter-terrorism efforts.
The Homeland Security Division will provide leadership within the Sheriff's Office to ensure that all of our first responders from all divisions have the basic training and equipment to deter, prevent, and respond to acts of terrorism in Shelby County. This division will provide timely information to the public regarding awareness training and other key areas that will assist law enforcement in securing our homeland.
Vision
Our vision is to be a national leader in counter-terrorism operations. Our priority is to prevent acts of terrorism, and yet be able to mitigate the effects of an attack should one occur.
Coordination
The Homeland Security Division will develop partnerships both public and private. Representatives will continue to participate in the Governor’s Counter-Terrorism Support Element, the USAI Committee, and the Area Maritime Safety Committee. We will provide representatives for the District 11 advisory committees. Efforts will be made to further our relationship with the Harbor Safety Committee and the United States Coast Guard to increase our capabilities on and around President’s Island. We will also provide liaisons for each site identified as a key asset or critical infrastructure.
Members of the division will strive to strengthen our current alliances with the health community both public and private. We will continue to participate in local and regional training exercises. Coordination with the Shelby County Office of Preparedness will continue to ensure timely distribution of equipment and the exchange of information.
